About our Cause

Swim for Rivers and Educare Mpame are collaborating on bring water to the people of Mpame.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s famous line, “Water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink,” reflects the plight faced by rural areas in South Africa, including wards 18, 19, and 28 of the Amathole district municipality. These wards depend on the Mcwasa River water scheme, which includes a dam, purification plant, control reservoir, and subsidiary reservoirs, designed to provide water to communal taps serving 6 to 8 households.

The non-profit organization Equality Collective initiated a monitoring system, revealing that 87.8% of the reports between October and March indicated no water. Despite a full dam and abundant rainfall, the taps remain dry due to issues with pumping water from the purification plant to the control reservoir. The 380-volt, three-phase pumps are often inoperable due to power supply problems from Eskom.

Captured rainwater and water from rivers and springs, shared with animals, become the primary options when the communal taps run dry. However, accessing these sources is difficult, and the water is unsuitable for drinking unless boiled.

Captured rainwater and water from rivers and springs, shared with animals, become the primary options when the communal taps run dry. However, accessing these sources is difficult, and the water is unsuitable for drinking unless boiled. It is crucial for households to have efficient water-capturing methods for drinking and cooking, utilizing springs and rivers for washing and cleaning.

The lack of information regarding communal water supply exacerbates the problem, as residents exhaust their captured rainwater while waiting for taps to be restored. During the dry season, people are left with only water from springs and rivers. Many households face challenges with rainwater capture, either due to poorly installed gutters or insufficient resources to purchase and install tanks and gutters. As a result, they resort to placing buckets and drums beneath the eaves to collect water runoff.

Educare Mpame South Africa has created a watering point at a spring, utilizing tanks filled by a submersible pump and generator. They plan to replicate this setup in other locations, employing solar pumps, fencing off springs, and using 5,000-liter tanks for water storage, considering the logistical challenges and cost associated with transporting pumps and generators.”

We have now identified 5 locations for further water harvesting allowing villagers access to water that is clean and easier to collect. Both organisations are excited by the collaboration and sharing of information and resources to make this possible.

Your donation no matter how small will make a huge difference in the life of another.

With your help we have reached our target of R125 000 for KwaPathla, we are now asking that you please look at supporting this exciting new initiative with Mpame Educare to raise R250 000.

After successfully delivering 60 Hippo Rollers to KwaPhahla in the former Transkei, Swim for Rivers will endeavour to fund its first borehole in this village. It will allow the people to get clean water and not share the stream with animals going forward.
